Don’t Do it For Any Other Reason

You know, I was contemplating a New Year’s resolution two nights ago and learned a very valuable lesson I’d like to share with you.

The number one New Year’s Resolution (in America at least) was to lose weight. I wasn’t any different when 2012 was rolling around, however, although I certainly did stick to my goals and lose 30+ pounds, I kind of obsessively wanted to keep going. For the first time, two nights ago, I had an epiphany. The only reason I am going to eat healthy and exercise is not for more weight loss or not to be aesthetically pleasing, but to be healthy. I find when I am in that mindset, things seem so much clearer. Exercise (other than walking as I have always loved to walk) doesn’t seem like a monotonous chore, and having a grilled chicken salad isn’t a toss up between a burger. Now, not to say if you need to lose weight, you most certainly should, I personally left mine back in 2011/12 thankfully. You most certainly should lose weight for a myriad of health reasons you could repeat in your sleep. Whether you are already at your healthy weight or not though, keep the mindset to always exercise and eat well to be healthy. Not to be the thinnest. or the most muscular, or to prove some type of point. No. Don’t do it; you’re only harming yourself. Beside, when you only act to be healthy, everything else follows. You will lose weight because you are eating well and moving your body, you will gain muscle because you are eating and lifting weights and doing bodyweight training and not insanely obsessing over how many calories you have left for the day. Your body needs fuel to live, and your body needs movement to live. Give it both. If anything, I truly wish a New Year’s full of health for you. Blessings and a lot of love.

New Series: Move Your Body!

Starting today, I am staring Everything Under the Sun and Moon’s very first series. I plan on doing “series” of posts in different categories, however, this particular one is for exercise. As I have mentioned before, moving your body (regardless of how) is such a treat for yourself. You will benefit mentally, physically, and spiritually. You will see a daily update of simple treats to give your body. Feel free to do as much or as little of the workouts as you’d like. Any physical movement is better than none. I truly hope you enjoy.

As you can see, today’s workout is with your own bodyweight. Bodyweight routines are so much fun because the exercises depend strictly on how much you can handle. Go at your own individual pace. If you are unsure what an exercise is or how to perform it properly, just click on its name for pictures, videos, and descriptions.


Perform 10 pushups. Feel free to drop on your knees if standard pushups are too challenging. Feel your arm, shoulder, back and core muscles engaging. Take note of how you feel; are you shaky, stiff, or comfortable? There’s no rush, take your time.


Regular Squats

Perform 12 squats. Take notice to how your legs and buttocks feel. Feel your muscles work for you. Take your time.


Tricep Dips

Perform 12 tricep dips. These muscles are not used nearly as much in day to day activities. How does it feel to work these, are they one of your weaker body parts?


Reverse Crunch

Perform 10 reverse crunches. The distant cousin to the usual crunch. This type of crunch will give your abdominal muscles a job in a different way.


Boat Pose

Hold for 40-60 seconds or as long as comfortable. This is a real treat for your abdominal muscles, they’ll be delighted. Remember to breathe all throughout the exercise.


Child’s Pose

Hold for as long as you’d please. Ahh, what a relaxer. Enjoy the moments you are in this pose. Such a good tension reliever for the back. As a helpful hint, if you find getting and or staying in this pose difficult, try spreading your knees farther apart from one another.


Upward Facing Bow Pose

Hold for 20-60 seconds or however long it is comfortable. Open your heart and chest. What a stretch. Relax your neck and entire body. Relish the opening of your torso.

Ah. How do you feel now? See, nice and quick and pretty easy! Now that you finished, here’s a little present for you to take. Too Many People Think Pampering is a Treat

How many times have you heard someone say, “Whew, I need some self pampering!” or even, “I need some “me” time”? Well, you know what’s a shame? Those phrases are said all too often.

Having “me” time or pampering yourself shouldn’t be something you treat yourself to once a week or once a…eek, month. Now I understand some people are so busy they don’t even think they have time to go to the bathroom, however, no matter how busy you are, you always have time. How? Oh let me count the ways…

  1. Wake up 5 minutes, yes, only 5, earlier to open your curtains, or step outside, view the sunrise or just the beauty Mother Nature lies out for you day after day. Breathe.
  2. You have to drive to work? Most of us do. Is your commute longer than you’d like it to be? Great! Pop in some meditative music, or some sounds of Nature, or even relish in the silence of the tumble of your car’s engine and your breath. Don’t worry about angry drivers – they are their own people with their own worries, emotions, and personalities. You are you, in your own body and mind.
  3. In the shower. Sure, you have to get to work, get the kids ready for this or that, or a myriad of other things, but what about taking the time to really caring for your body? Even if you make it a quick affair, gently massage your scalp with shampoo, relieving any tension you may hold there. Lather soap into your skin, massage the warm water into your thirsty neck and back muscles. Relish in the moment you have all to yourself.
  4. Give yourself a full body massage. Yes, this one requires a little more time than than the others, however, it is well worth it if you can find the extra 10 minutes. Start at the top of your scalp, and work your way all the way down to your toes. Don’t forget your extremities and each finger as well! You’ll be surprised at what a good job you can do yourself.
  5. Exercise. You may have just scoffed, I know – you think you don’t have enough time. Start marching. Now. Go ahead, start marching until you finish reading this post. You don’t even have to lift your legs high, just move. Not so bad, huh? Oh, and while your watching TV tonight, remember this post (if you’d like) and do a few push ups or crunches, possible a jumping jack or two? Any movement is better than none. Your body craves it.
  6. Treat your mind to a blissful vacation. Are you dieting? Are you stressed? Use your mind, as you lie in bed, envision what it is that you most desire. A peaceful vacation in the mountains in Springtime? You’re there. Be there. As you drift to sleep feel, taste, hear, and see everything around you. Are you craving a piece of chocolate cake? Go ahead and feed your mind. Don’t just think it – feel it, move your finger through the thick frosting, indulge. Slosh the cake around and chew it thoroughly. Your mind is the only one out of your being’s trio (mind, body, and soul) that wants that cake anyway. [Beside, the more you fantasize about eating something, the less you crave it. A post to come on this.]

Now, these are just 6 simple ways above to pamper yourself on a daily basis. There are countless others; especially depending on your individual likes. So go ahead, pamper yourself daily. There is always a way, it’s just a matter of convincing your stubborn mind that you CAN be relaxed and work a 10 hour shift. Much love to everyone of you. My wish for today is for everyone who comes across this post to find some way, no matter how small or large, to find some time for themselves. We all deserve it.

Walking in Place

So, if you read a few of my previous posts, then you see that when I think of something I like to research it and see if anyone else has thought of it. Well, this subject is probably a little less than common, or who knows, maybe you’ve thought about it yourself! Either way, let’s talk about walking in place. The pros, cons, beautiful and ugly. Okay, I’ll relax on the dramatics, this gets me excited sharing all of this information I think about though! The thought that someone else may somehow benefit from all of my ideas, pictures and thoughts that I want to share is so astounding. I digress though!

So walking in place may sound boring, weird, or just downright a waste of time, however, if I could explain how I see walking in place as a little treasure of mine, you may surprise yourself. Well, I like fitness…fitness and exercise are two (or one, depending how you look at it) of my favorite hobbies. I can’t tell a lie and say I love to run. I don’t. I don’t like running or any of the feelings I get from it before, during, or after the fact. I’ve tried it on many different occasion and I never could get into it. It’s not that I can’t do it, I can, however, it doesn’t bring me joy. Neither does any other form of joint pounding, sweat pouring cardio. I have tried everything from piloxing to tae boe to FitnessTV cardio blast workouts and I just am not a quick mover. My soul isn’t in it. Walking, however, well, walking and I just mesh. I love to walk. When I am walking, I’m not “working”out, I am being. I am enjoying, and I am at peace. Nature and I have a wonderful relationship, and walking through all of Her beauty does my body, mind, and soul wonders I could never describe with words. If I could walk outside a few hours a day everyday I would. There a few little things stopping me, however. I’m sure some of you can relate to a few or more. For one, I am a petite young lady who does not do herself well to be walking around outside early morning or after dark. Not that I live in a high crime area, albeit, it never is a good idea to go looking for trouble (or so I feel at least). My love likes to sleep in whereas I like to be up early buzzing about, so I let him rest, and I work throughout the day most of the week. It is cold, so very cold, in my area at the moment and although I love cooler weather, I chill quite easily and would prefer to walk when the warming Sun is higher in the sky (than early morning). Sometimes there of course is weather that I’d rather not be out in (such as some recent snow and thunder storms). When I can walk in Nature, I am so for it, however, for those other times, I like to continue exercising my body with the movement that brings me so much peace and happiness. I was introduced to walking in place a while back while researching an exercise I would truly love. I knew I loved walking, however, for whatever reason never contemplated walking in place for those times when going outside wouldn’t work. Once I started, I never looked back. I’m a little researcher – I just love seeing and learning about new things I think up or just come about, so walking in place while working on the computer is wonderful for me. I easily walk about 3-6 miles in the morning before work while never leaving my bedroom (quite a cozy thought for those icy winter mornings)! Of course walking in place does not work the same muscles walking regularly does, but it has a charm of its own, drastically similar. If I’m not working on the computer, I take the time to commune with the beautiful Seasonal Energies around me and listen to meditative or soothing music. I love to open my curtains and watch the sky go from velvety black to sherbert as the Sun comes to greet myself and everyone around me. Walking and walking in place are my forms of meditation. There is no other exercise (though I love weight lifting and yoga) that relaxes me and brings me as much joy as walking. If you have never tried it, or even if you have and didn’t go for it the first go, give it a(nother) try. Maybe it may not be for you, or maybe it will. If it is, wonderful – I am so happy you can share in the bliss and calmness it brings me, and if it is not, then just as well – I know for a fact if you delve into all of the different forms of moving your amazing body you will surely find your body, mind, and soul’s favorite.
